Registering for the Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CNPS) professional liability protection (PLP) and core services is a requirement for registration with CRNS.
Beginning with the 2027 licensure year, CRNS registrants will register directly with CNPS for professional liability protection and core services through MyCNPS.
Previously, the cost of CNPS PLP and core services was included in the total CRNS licensure fee for all practicing registrants. Now, CRNS will no longer collect this fee as part of the CRNS renewal process. Instead, registrants will register and pay CNPS directly for their PLP and core services.

CNPS Professional Liability Protection FAQs
Professional liability protection (PLP) provides financial compensation for members of the public who have been harmed because of negligence by a health professional.
As a result, the public is protected because an adequate source of compensation is available to them. The health-care professional is also protected because they benefit from legal representation when facing a claim for compensation. They do not have to personally bear the full cost of the legal proceedings and the compensation, should the court order that they be paid.
You must obtain professional liability protection from the Canadian Nurse Protective Society (CNPS) website to complete your CRNS registration.
- Visit the CNPS website and choose your province and nursing designation
- Activate or create a MyCNPS account using the same email as you use for CRNS registration
- Complete the process to obtain your CNPS professional liability protection
Yes. If you are a current, practicing CRNS registrant, you were required to have obtained CNPS professional liability protection and core services. You will need to renew these services with the CNPS directly to complete your CRNS registration.
No, the CRNS will receive confirmation that you meet the professional liability protection requirement directly from the CNPS. No further action is required on your part.
The CNPS supplementary protection program is not required to renew or complete your CRNS registration/licensure.
