How do I know what I am professionally responsible for in my RN, RN(AAP) or NP practice in Saskatchewan?

Nursing practice is evolving rapidly, and it is more important than ever for RNs, RN(AAP)s and NPs to know what is expected of them in their professional practice. RNs, RN(AAP)s and NPs are professionally responsible for complying with each competency, indicator or core behavior contained in the following:

The following are important updates for RNs, RN(AAP)s and NPs to be aware of and action that can be taken to enhance professional responsibility:

  • The CRNS Code of Conduct was implemented on February 17, 2026.
    • Suggested Actions:
      • Review the new Code of Conduct and FAQ
      • RNs, RN(AAP)s and NPs might consider adding areas of learning to their Continuing Competence Program (CCP) learning plan.
  • RN Entry-Level Competencies (ELC) are currently being reviewed nationally. The draft ELCs will be validated by each province in the upcoming weeks.
    • Suggested Actions:
      • Watch for a Nursing Practice Update email when the online feedback survey is live.
      • Complete the survey.
      • RNs, RN(AAP)s and NPs who participate in the review might consider adding the review of the draft ELCs to their CCP learning plan.
  • RN(AAP) Clinical Decision Tools (CDT) are currently being reviewed for currency.
    • Suggested Actions:
      • RN(AAP)s are invited to reach out to practiceadvice@crns.ca if interested in providing feedback on the CDTs.
      • RN(AAP)s who participate in the review might consider adding participation in the review to their CCP learning plan
  • Recent changes to CRNS Bylaws and Council Policy 2.7 have changed the requirements for NPs prescribing methadone solely for the purpose of pain management.
    • Suggested Actions:
      • Review Council Policy 2.7.
      • NPs might consider adding identified areas of learning to their CCP learning plan.

All Nursing Practice Updates are sent by email and posted to the CRNS website. Monitoring the email account you use to access your CRNS profile and reading emails from the CRNS are simple and impactful ways for nurses to remain up to date with professional practice expectations.
