New PLP Process: Activate Your MyCNPS Account Ahead of Renewal
As previously communicated, CRNS is implementing a new process for professional liability protection (PLP) as part of license renewal.
Beginning with the 2027 licensure year, the fee for PLP will be paid directly to the Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CNPS), instead of it being collected as part of your CRNS renewal fee.
No Change to the Cost of License Renewal
We remind you this is a change to the process only, and there is no change to the total cost of licensure. CRNS licensure fees and the applicable annual fee for CNPS PLP and Core Services remain the same. For a current breakdown of fees, see the CRNS Fee Schedule.
This process change will result in two separate transactions. Please check with your employer for any questions you have about submitting claims for reimbursement of fees.
What Do I Need to Do?
You will need to activate your MyCNPS account before renewing your license. This can be done now, so registrants are encouraged to activate their account in advance of the renewal period (October 1 - November 30). If you have not activated your MyCNPS account before renewal, you will be directed to do so from the renewal application form as part of the renewal process.
As PLP is a requirement for licensure, this step must be completed before your renewal can be finalized.
Activating Your MyCNPS Account
- Visit my.cnps.ca
- Click ‘Create or activate an account’ under the Login button
- Use the same email address as your CRNS account to activate your MyCNPS account
- Have your CRNS registration number handy (available on your online profile or on the Nurse License Check)
- Follow the steps in the MyCNPS portal to complete your account activation
- Watch for additional renewal instructions and support resources closer to the registration period
What Will Renewal Look Like?
License renewal will continue to begin through the CRNS Portal. When renewal opens:
- Sign in to the CRNS Portal
- Within the renewal application you will be directed to the MyCNPS Portal to complete registration for PLP and Core Services
- Return to the CRNS Portal to complete your license renewal
The role of CRNS in assessing licensure requirements is not changing. Your successful CNPS registration will be automatically confirmed with CRNS as part of your renewal process.
CRNS and CNPS are working together to make the licensure process as simple and seamless as possible. Support resources will be shared ahead of the renewal period with step-by-step guidance.
About CNPS PLP and Core Services
CNPS is a national organization that provides legal support and liability protection to nurses across Canada and continues to be the PLP provider for CRNS. PLP helps provide access to legal representation and financial protection related to nursing practice.
Additional information about CNPS PLP and Core Services, and the registration process is available on the CNPS website.
How Will Having a Personal CNPS Account Benefit Me?
- Your direct registration with the CNPS, in real time, will make it easier to identify you as a beneficiary of the CNPS, will eliminate verification steps should you require CNPS assistance, and will therefore enable easier access to CNPS services if required.
- As this initiative is already in place or in progress in other provinces and territories, it will enable the CNPS to better support nurses’ mobility across jurisdictions.
