The College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS) is sharing information regarding a Health Canada safety advisory warning about the use of unauthorized injectable peptide drugs.
Unauthorized health products may pose serious health risks as they have not been approved by Health Canada for safety, efficacy or quality.
These products include retatrutide, currently being studied in Phase 3 clinical trials for obesity, type 2 diabetes and other related indications. Retatrutide has not been approved by Health Canada for human use. Eli Lilly Canada recently issued a public safety notice regarding unapproved retatrutide products being sold through unauthorized sources.
RNs and NPs should be aware that patients may report using, purchasing or seeking access to unapproved retatrutide products or other unauthorized injectable peptide drugs.
As with all medications and health products, RNs and NPs are expected to act within their individual scope of practice and applicable standards, and to use professional judgment when assessing, educating and caring for patients.
